Puerto Rican baseball star Roberto Clemente remains a national icon on the island and an essential figure for Latinos in the United States, where he endured discrimination in the 1960s for being both Black and Hispanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clemente died in 1972 in a plane crash near San Juan, close to where he was born, while traveling to Nicaragua with humanitarian aid. He was inducted into the U.S. Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, following a career that earned him 12 Gold Gloves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognized as one of the greatest right fielders in baseball history, he reached the milestone of 3,000 hits in 1972. His success in the United States never overshadowed his commitment to the disadvantaged\u2014a sensitivity shaped by the racism he experienced firsthand, even as a sports star, during his early years in the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born on August 18, 1934, in Carolina near San Juan, he was the youngest of seven children of Melchor Clemente and Luisa Walker, who worked in a sugar plantation and a store, respectively. After practicing track and field as a child, he soon excelled in baseball, debuting in 1952 with the Santurce Crabbers in Puerto Rico\u2019s league. He quickly became the island\u2019s top baseball figure, attracting interest from major U.S. teams, and in 1954 signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates for four thousand dollars\u2014eventually becoming the greatest player in the team\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SEPARATED FROM HIS TEAMMATES BECAUSE OF HIS RACE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Clemente, whose Latino heritage and strong Spanish accent limited his recognition in the U.S. press, is considered the most important Major League player of the 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1958 he threw out twenty\u2011two baserunners, and in 1960 helped the Pirates win the World Series against the New York Yankees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1966 he was named National League MVP, and in 1971 he led the Pirates\u2014once a mediocre team\u2014to a second World Series title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his career he played in 14 All-Star Games, twelve consecutively, and earned twelve Gold Gloves. He also won four batting titles (1961, 1964, 1965, and 1967). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite his undeniable success, Clemente\u2019s career was not fully recognized\u2014likely due to his Latino background and accent when speaking English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports from the era describe how Clemente had to travel on buses designated for Black passengers and eat and sleep in establishments restricted to people of his skin color. During those difficult years, Clemente often said he simply wanted to be treated as a human being, and he is remembered for advocating equal treatment for Latino and Black players. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On frequent trips to Puerto Rico, he taught baseball to disadvantaged children\u2014a commitment that led him in 1972 to travel to Nicaragua after a devastating earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HIS LIFE IN A MUSICAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Clemente\u2019s life ended abruptly on December 31, 1972, when the plane carrying humanitarian aid to Managua crashed into the sea shortly after takeoff. His body was never recovered. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His legacy remains alive in Puerto Rico, where one of San Juan\u2019s main baseball stadiums bears his name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The musical DC\u20117: The Story of Roberto Clemente<\/em> premiered in San Juan, after nearly a year on stage in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to playwright Luis Caballero, the production helps Puerto Ricans understand the discrimination Clemente faced in the U.S., his fight for equality, and his humanitarian work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 30, 1972, Clemente became the first Latin American player in Major League history\u2014and the eleventh overall\u2014to reach 3,000 hits, a milestone that virtually guarantees entry into the Hall of Fame. He also won the National League MVP award in 1966. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puerto Rico\u2019s Sports Museum has displayed Hall of Fame plaques since December 2011, including those of Clemente and fellow Puerto Ricans Orlando Cepeda and Roberto Alomar. Alomar recorded 2,724 hits, 474 stolen bases, twelve All-Star appearances, ten Gold Gloves, and 1,508 runs over 17 seasons with the Padres, Indians, Orioles, Diamondbacks, and White Sox. Cepeda played in seven All-Star Games and became the 1967 National League MVP with the St. Louis Cardinals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
