New York, June 12 (EFE) – UN Secretary-General António Guterres maintains that Elon Musk becoming the world’s first trillionaire “highlights the problem of inequality.”
His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, explained this on Friday at his daily press briefing, following the initial public offering (IPO) of SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace company.
“This highlights the problem of inequality,” the spokesperson stated.
He added that it also underscores “the responsibility of those on the privileged side of that inequality to do everything in their power to provide support everywhere.”
Elon Musk became the world’s first trillionaire on Friday after SpaceX’s IPO, the largest in history, which boosted the company’s market capitalization to over $2.2 trillion.
Although he was already the world’s richest person before SpaceX’s initial public offering (IPO), his stake in that company is valued at over $766 billion, in addition to his stake in Tesla, estimated at around $279 billion, according to CNBC.
The transaction would have boosted Musk’s net worth to over $1.05 trillion.
His becoming the first person in the world to reach that figure had already reignited the debate about inequality, as noted by Dujarric.
Musk’s fortune is comparable to the economies of Taiwan and exceeds the GDP of countries like Switzerland or the Netherlands.
An analysis by the NGO Oxfam revealed that with this new milestone, he is now richer than the poorest 46% of the world’s population, some 3.8 billion people.
